The ILC’s efforts to codify and progressively develop international law are essential for fostering cooperation and trust among States. As one of the most respected institutions in the area of international law, the ILC adheres to rigorous standards when making its determinations. Some of the most significant conventions based on drafts from the Commission now form part of the foundation for international law with regard to relations between states. They include the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations, the international law of treaties and international criminal law.

The ILC maintains frequent contact with the UN member states. Germany regularly comments on the ILC’s current projects within the framework of the UN General Assembly Sixth Committee (Legal Committee).
