Diplomatic relations with Maldives were established in 1966. Germany’s interests are represented by its embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Germany is represented by an honorary consul in the capital Malé. The Republic of Maldives opened an embassy in Berlin in September 2016.
Germany began early on to assist Maldives in its democratisation process. The Federal Foreign Office is currently funding a joint legal advisory project. Bilateral relations have intensified under Ibrahim Solih’s Government.
Up until October 2022, more than 100,000 tourists from Germany have visited Maldives, 8% of total visitor numbers. Tourism is by far the country’s largest economic sector, contributing around 29% to GDP. In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, tourism initially suffered a huge collapse, but the sector has now largely recovered.
