Diplomatic relations with Maldives were established in 1966. Germany’s interests are represented by its embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Germany has an honorary consulate in the capital Malé. The Republic of Maldives opened an embassy in Berlin in September 2016. Germany began early on to assist Maldives in its democratisation process. The Federal Foreign Office is currently funding a joint legal advisory project. Bilateral relations have intensified under Ibrahim Solih’s Government, for example cooperation on climate policy.

Each year, some 100,000 tourists from Germany visit Maldives and thus account for more than seven percent of all visitors to that country. Tourism is by far the country’s largest economic sector, contributing around 29 percent to GDP. Every year, the island nation has a high-profile presence at ITB Berlin, the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show®.
