Welcome
Germany and Maldives: Bilateral relations
Diplomatic relations with Maldives were established in 1966. Germany’s interests are represented by its embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Germany is represented by an honorary consul in the capital Malé, while the Republic of Maldives opened an embassy in Berlin in September 2016.
Germany began early on to assist Maldives in its democratisation process. The Federal Foreign Office is currently funding a joint legal advisory project. Bilateral relations have intensified under Ibrahim Solih’s Government. In March 2023, the Maldivian President Solih and Foreign Minister Shahid visited Berlin also meeting the Federal President.
Germans make up one of the largest groups of international tourists in the Maledives. Tourism is by far the country’s largest economic sector, contributing around 29 percent to GDP. In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, tourism initially suffered a huge collapse, but the sector has now largely recovered.
