Germany and the USA: Bilateral relations

09.03.2026 - Article

The Federal Republic of Germany and the United States of America are linked by historical ties, shared experiences, values and interests.

Close transatlantic coordination to preserve peace and security in Europe and worldwide remains as important as it has been over recent decades for addressing the major challenges of our time, particularly in light of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

The transatlantic security community within the framework of NATO and the US military personnel permanently stationed in Germany help to ensure the security of Germany and of Europe.

Close economic ties create jobs and contribute to fostering extensive exchange between Germany and the United States. In 2025, the United States was Germany’s second most important trading partner after China. Since 2015, the largest share of German exports has consistently gone to the United States each year. With over 6,000 companies present in all 50 US states, Germany is the third-largest investor in the United States. German companies and their subsidiaries are the fourth-largest foreign employer in the United States, providing some 870,000 jobs.

Germany and the United States are linked by a dense network of relations in the sphere of civil society, science and culture. Exchange programmes and private initiatives also make an important contribution to this broad spectrum. Germany remains one of the most popular destinations for students from the United States. The more than 200 German-American town twinning arrangements are another key part of cultural exchange.

The political landscape is defined by two parties: the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.
