Germany and San Marino: Bilateral relations

02.03.2023 - Article

Diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic of Germany have been in place since 1 October 1995. The German Ambassador to Italy is also accredited to San Marino. San Marino’s Ambassador to Germany operates from San Marino.

San Marino and Germany work closely together particularly in the multilateral sphere and in the UN. San Marino is a member of numerous international organisations, for example, the IMF, the OSCE, the International Criminal Court, the WTO and the World Tourism Organization and, like Germany, is committed to the global protection of human rights, active peace policy and the worldwide abolition of the death penalty.

San Marino ranks 152nd among Germany’s trading partners in terms of imports and 147th in terms of exports. Together with Monaco and Andorra, San Marino is currently negotiating an association agreement with the EU.

To combat tax evasion, an agreement on tax transparency between the EU and San Marino was signed in Brussels on 8 December 2015. The agreement entered into force at the start of 2017.
