Germany and San Marino: Bilateral relations

01.03.2024 - Article

Diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic of Germany have been in place since 1 October 1995. The German Ambassador to Italy is also accredited to San Marino. San Marino’s Ambassador to Germany operates from San Marino.

San Marino and Germany work closely together, particularly in the multilateral sphere and in the United Nations. San Marino is a member of numerous international organisations, for example, the IMF, the OSCE, the International Court of Justice, the WTO and the World Tourism Organization and, like Germany, is committed to the global protection of human rights, active peace policy and the worldwide abolition of the death penalty.

San Marino ranks 141st among Germany’s trading partners in terms of imports and 131st in terms of exports (as of 2023). San Marino and Andorra completed their negotiations with the European Commission on the text of EU association agreements in 2023. An agreement on tax transparency between the EU and San Marino was signed on 8 December 2015 with a view to combating tax evasion, and entered into force at the start of 2017.
