Bilateral relations are friendly. As a stable democracy, Ghana is a central partner both in West Africa and at global level advocating a multilateral rules-based order. This close and strategic partnership finds expression in high-level visits between the two countries, increasing trade figures, growing numbers of Ghanaian students and trainees in Germany, almost 70 university partnerships, 50 years of development cooperation (with Germany as the largest bilateral donor in Ghana) and more than two decades of close military cooperation.

Reciprocal visits take place on a regular basis. The first trip abroad by President John Dramani Mahama in his second term of office took him to the Munich Security Conference in 2025. His predecessor, President Akufo-Addo, visited Germany on several occasions during his time in office (2017-2025). Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Ghana in November 2025. Ghana is an important trading partner for Germany in West Africa. In 2025, Germany’s imports from Ghana amounted to 290 million euro, while German exports to Ghana totalled 274 million euro. The main imports from Ghana are raw materials and foodstuffs. Germany’s primary exports to the country are machinery, chemical products and foodstuffs.

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung both have offices in Ghana. The Goethe-Institut is involved in cultural work and offers language lessons in Accra. A Delegation of German Industry and Commerce has represented the German business sector in Accra since 2011, while Germany Trade and Invest has maintained an office in the capital since 2014. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has a regional office in Accra also fostering relations with Nigeria and Cameroon. Furthermore, Ghana boasts three schools involved in the Schools: Partners for the Future initiative (PASCH) and Accra is home to West Africa’s only German school abroad.

Ghana is also an important cooperation partner for Germany in the scientific sphere: There are several research centres and programmes supported by the Federal Government based in Ghana including the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) and the Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA).
