Welcome
Germany and Fiji: Bilateral relations
Germany opened an Embassy in Fiji’s capital, Suva, on 19 August 2023. The then Federal Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, visited Fiji in May 2024.
Germany and Fiji share common interests in tackling the climate crisis. In 2017, the UN Climate Change Conference COP23, jointly organised by Fiji and Germany, took place in Bonn under the Presidency of Fiji. Fiji is a member of the UN Group of Friends on Climate and Security, founded by Germany and Nauru.
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has an office in Suva. It carries out projects as part of Germany’s development cooperation with the region, e.g. a programme to strengthen the financing and implementation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs). Germany has expanded its cooperation on curbing the impacts of climate change in Fiji and the region.
Representatives of institutions in Fiji regularly participate in themed visits to and workshops in Germany, for instance on the topic of freedom of the media.
Germany supports Fiji’s development through its contributions to the EU Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI) and implements microprojects in the spheres of infrastructure, education and vocational training, as well as health, the advancement of women and combating domestic violence.
