Germany and Honduras: Bilateral relations

29.05.2024 - Article

Relations between Germany and Honduras are traditionally friendly and Germany is held in high regard in Honduras. Bilateral, regional and multilateral development cooperation is greatly appreciated by Honduras. Alongside the development cooperation implementing organisations (GIZ and KfW), the German-Honduran Chamber of Commerce, several German political foundations, two German cultural centres and various NGOs are active in Honduras.

Germany is Honduras’ principal trading partner in the EU, the primary importer worldwide of Honduran coffee exports and the leading importer of textiles produced in Honduras. Germany’s main exports to the country are industrial facilities, machinery and electrical equipment, chemical and plastic products, engines and motor vehicles, iron goods and sheet metal. Honduras is a member of the Central American Association Agreement with the EU. It has a trade surplus with Germany.

Development cooperation between Honduras and Germany is wide-ranging and involves a large number of institutions. In future, there is to be more regional cooperation with the Central American Integration System (SICA) and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE), based in Tegucigalpa, as partners. Since 1961, Germany has made available bilateral funding totalling more than 600 million euro for technical and financial cooperation programmes in Honduras. This makes Germany one of the country’s largest bilateral donors along with the United States and Spain.

Priority areas are vocational education and training, migration, as well as protection of the environment and resources. Especially in these areas, Germany is a respected and influential partner in Honduras, not least thanks to the work of numerous German NGOs. Regional projects focus on youth violence prevention, renewable energy and energy efficiency. As Honduras is one of the countries most severely affected by climate change and has been plagued by major disasters (drought, tropical storms, epidemics) time and again, Germany has provided humanitarian assistance on repeated occasions.
