Germany and Guinea: Bilateral Relations

16.08.2024 - Article

During the Cold War, relations between Guinea and Germany fluctuated. Guinea broke off relations with the Federal Republic of Germany between 1970 and 1975. During this period it developed active cooperation with the former German Democratic Republic. Following the first democratic presidential elections in 2010 and the 2013 parliamentary elections, relations stabilised.

Germany condemned the military putsch to remove President Condé on 5 September 2021 and called for an immediate return to constitutional order.

There is potential for improvement in bilateral economic relations. There are hardly any German businesses currently active in Guinea. Bauxite is Germany’s main import from the country. An investment protection agreement with Guinea has been in place since 2014.

As part of its strategic realignment in 2020, the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development decided to end bilateral development cooperation with Guinea. Ongoing projects in the fields of basic education and basic healthcare are expected to be concluded between 2023 and 2028. Furthermore, Germany supports regional projects to improve governance in the field of raw materials and to build border management capacities.
