Foreign Minister Wadephul is travelling to Paris today for a meeting of the Weimar Triangle with his French and Polish counterparts. India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will attend as a guest of the Weimar Triangle. Find out more here about the meeting.

As the year begins, the Weimar Triangle Foreign Ministers are meeting in Paris to discuss the security situation in Europe and the ongoing peace talks on the war in Ukraine. After yesterday’s meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris with the US negotiators, the French, German and Polish Foreign Ministers are following up immediately today on the outcomes of these talks. The main focus will be on developing robust security guarantees for Ukraine. At the same time, it remains essential to support the country against Russia’s continuing war of aggression. The Weimar Triangle Foreign Ministers will also discuss this today.

Focus on European security

In addition to the situation in Ukraine, the talks will also focus on strengthening Europe’s security architecture. The EU’s defence capabilities must be further expanded so that Europe can continue to take decisive action as a geopolitical actor in the future. In view of the growing threats posed by hybrid attacks, cybercrime and a changing global order, it is important that Europe is in a strong position and increases its capabilities, particularly in the cyber field.

Economic resilience and strategic partnerships

A resilient economy and the further development of global partnerships form part of a strong and self-confident Europe. Germany is endeavouring to make Europe’s economic structures resilient in various ways, from diversifying supply chains to greater cooperation on strategic raw materials. The aim is to reduce dependence on individual actors and to make Europe’s economy more resilient for the long term.

In this context, partnerships with important global players are becoming increasingly important. It thus sends an important message that Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar will attend a Weimar Triangle meeting for the first time today. India is not only a major trade partner, but also a key strategic player in global security architecture. Together, we share a responsibility for a stable international system.

India and the Indo-Pacific – a key role for Europe

India plays a leading role in the Indo-Pacific – a region of great importance for Europe, too – in ensuring freedom of sea routes and preserving a strong, rules-based order, which is vital for both regions’ security and prosperity. At their meeting in Paris, the Foreign Ministers will further deepen cooperation with India on security, defence and economic matters, also with a view to the EU‑India Summit at the end of the month.

Furthermore, the EU and India are working intensively on a joint free trade agreement. At their meeting today, the Foreign Ministers will discuss progress in the negotiations.
