Equatorial Guinea Equatorial Guinea

13.02.2020 - Article

Germany and Equatorial Guinea were both non-permanent members of the UN Security Council in 2019. In September 2018, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and President Teodoro Obiang met on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The country’s oil boom enabled the Government of Equatorial Guinea to spend a great deal on infrastructure and construction projects. This also offers business opportunities for German companies, but the difficult business environment entails significant risks. The ongoing recession in recent years has made the business climate less favourable.

Cultural relations between Equatorial Guinea and Germany are based on initiatives by individuals and the German Embassy. Germany has no cultural institute in the country and there are only a few former scholarship holders. German is not taught at any of the country’s schools or universities. In recent years, the German Embassy in Malabo has, in cooperation with other cultural institutes, organised several cultural projects as well as measures to promote sport.
