The Vietnamese National Assembly has approved the free trade agreement with the EU. In so doing, it is sending an important signal of support for an open, rules-based trade system needed particularly for the economic recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thanks to the most ambitious free trade agreement with an emerging economy to date, industrial tariffs between the EU and Viet Nam will soon be eliminated. In addition, the agreement sets down binding high standards for climate change mitigation, employee rights and fair competition.
In talks with his colleague Phạm Bình Minh, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas emphasised the interest in close cooperation anchored in respect for shared values.
