German aid for Romanian nightclub fire victims
People injured in the appalling conflagration in a Bucharest nightclub on 30 October have now been flown to Germany for further medical treatment. A team of German doctors travelled to Bucharest last Sunday to pave the way for this move in coordination with their Romanian counterparts. Romanian doctors have provided excellent emergency treatment for the numerous burn victims. Longer-term treatment can be provided in specialist clinics in Germany, such as those in Ludwigshafen, Offenbach and Cologne.
This medical collaboration has been supported by the German Embassy in Bucharest, the Federal Foreign Office and various Romanian agencies. Maria Böhmer, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, was actively involved in coordinating matters with the Medical Director of the BG Clinic Ludwigshafen and remained in contact with the German medical team in Bucharest.
The German Government is also assisting the Romanian health authorities by supplying materials which are due to arrive in Bucharest in the next few days. Other EU countries are also helping Romania and have flown patients out.
Minister of State Maria Böhmer said:
It was very important for me that we provide real, physical help for the injured Romanians and stand by the Romanian people in the aftermath of this major disaster. Germany and Romania are linked in many ways, not just politically, but also on a person-to-person level, and Romania is right to count on our assistance.
My thanks go above all to the supportive doctors from German clinics who have worked in Romania and in Germany to help those injured in the blaze. I am also pleased that the Romanian and German authorities have cooperated so superbly to ensure that the patients could be transferred at such short notice.
