Foreign Minister Westerwelle to host a conference on the Internet and human rights

A conference on “The Internet and Human Rights: Building a free, open and secure Internet” will take place at the Federal Foreign Office on 13 and 14 September.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and Birgit Grundmann, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Justice, will speak at the conference on Friday.

More than 100 representatives from governments, civil society, business and academia will attend the conference, which will focus on the protection of human rights on the Internet.

They include Federal Government Human Rights Commissioner Markus Löning, EU Special Representative for Human Rights Stavros Lambrinidis, UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression Frank La Rue, OSCE representative on freedom of the media Dunja Mijatovic, as well as Swedish deputy foreign minister Frank Belfrage.

The conference will be held in English and is being organized by Aarhus University, Human Rights Watch, the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society as well as the Federal Foreign Office.
