Foreign Minister Westerwelle shocked and saddened by ferry disaster in India
A large number of people have been killed in a ferry disaster on Brahmaputra river in the Indian state of Assam.
Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has expressed his profound shock and sadness at the disaster. He issued the following statement in Berlin today (1 May):
“Our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy go to the families and loved ones of the numerous victims this terrible disaster claimed. The helpers deserve every respect and the greatest admiration for carrying out a brave and rapid rescue operation. I very much hope their courage will be rewarded and more survivors found.”
Background:
The search for victims and survivors is still ongoing. Some 300 passengers are said to have been on board, more than 100 are still missing. There is nothing to indicate that there were foreigners among the passengers. The German Consulate-General in Kolkata is in contact with the local authorities in Assam.
