To mark the 40th anniversary of the conclusion of the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage by UNESCO’s General Conference in November 1972, the Federal Foreign Office is presenting the exhibition “World Heritage in Germany”.

In November 2011, Germany was elected for the fourth time to serve on UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee (1 January 2012 to 31 December 2015).

Minister of State Cornelia Pieper will open the exhibition in the atrium of the Federal Foreign Office (Werderscher Markt 1) on Monday, 27 February, at 6.00 p.m.; the event will be open to the press.

The exhibition will be open to the public on weekdays from 10.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. from 28 February to 13 April 2012.

The exhibition presents Germany’s World Heritage sites from various angles. Photographs by Hans-J. Aubert and an installation on the German beech forests give insights into the diversity and beauty of World Heritage sites in Germany.

The education programme “Museum coffers for World Heritage sites” developed by Paderborn University, and satellite images of World Heritage sites from all over the world provided by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) show that UNESCO’s World Heritage programme not only gives a major boost to tourism but has also long been of great relevance in teaching and research. DLR satellite imaging, for instance, can be used to monitor World Heritage sites.

With its UNESCO Chairs at institutions of higher education and its multitude of research institutions, Germany is an important partner country for UNESCO.
