Human Rights Commissioner on new media law in Hungary

22.12.2010 - Press release

In connection with Hungary’s new media law, Markus Löning, the Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office, issued today (22 December) the following statement:

“Independence of the media and a diverse media landscape are core values of the European Union. Competition of ideas and public debate are hallmarks of a free and democratic society.
Free media is something we Europeans stand up for all over the world. This means that governments and parliaments in all EU member states must clearly commit to and actively protect freedom of the media. As the future EU Presidency, Hungary bears a special responsibility here.”
