Federal Foreign Office on the extension of the UN Independent Fact-Finding Mission on the human rights situation in Iran

04.04.2024 - Press release

A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement on the extension of the mandate of the Independent Fact-Finding Mission on the human rights situation in Iran by the UN Human Rights Council on 4 April 2024:

Even a year and a half after the death of Jina Mahsa Amini and the brutal suppression of the subsequent protests, the human rights situation in Iran remains disastrous. The regime violates its citizens’ fundamental rights on a daily basis. Dissidents are systematically prosecuted by the judicial system and there are regular reports of torture and sexualised violence following arrests. Those in Iran taking to the streets for their freedom and political rights have to fear for their lives, whether it be due to the use of violence on the part of the security forces or executions. That is why it is so important that the UN Human Rights Council today extended the mandate of its Independent Fact-Finding Mission and that of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran by another year. This is a clear sign that the international community will continue to observe the situation very closely. Those responsible cannot count on going unpunished. We will not abandon the courageous people in Iran – we have an ongoing obligation to stand by them rather than leave them to their fate.
