Human Rights Commissioner Amtsberg on the detention of Alaaeldin Eladly in Egypt

14.09.2023 - Press release

I am deeply concerned about the detention of Alaaeldin Saad Mohamed Eladly. Mr Eladly has lived with his family in Germany for more than 30 years. He was detained upon entering Egypt on 18 August 2023 and has been in custody since then. He has not been given any reason for his detention and has no access to his lawyer. On 10 September 2023, Mr Eladly began a dry hunger strike, as did two of his children who have German nationality. I am very worried about their welfare and call on the responsible Egyptian authorities to deal with this case immediately in accordance with due process of law and to release Mr Eladly if no concrete charges are brought against him.
