On Tuesday (6 July), the “Discover Football” international women’s football festival kicks off in Berlin, with the opening event taking place on Wednesday (7 July).
The idea for the project came from the players of the host team from Berlin, BSV Al Dersimspor. “Discover Football” is being funded by the Federal Foreign Office as part of its Sport and Foreign Policy initiative.
Eight women’s teams from nine countries and four different continents will play against each other. Teams from Afghanistan, Ecuador, Paraguay, Austria, Zambia, Serbia, as well as a mixed Israeli-Palestinian team, have been invited to take part.
A programme of cultural events linked to the participating countries will be held throughout the tournament. These events will make intercultural exchange more tangible for visitors and ensure it leaves a lasting impression on them.
On Friday (9 July) Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office Cornelia Pieper will watch the match between the Afghan national women’s football team and the host team, BSV Al Dersimspor (the game starts at 3.30 p.m.). After the match – at 4.40 p.m. – Cornelia Pieper will take part in the Pink Sofa event along with Ali Askar Lali, the manager of the Afghan national side.
