Against the background of continuing violence in and around the Gaza Strip, Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier today (28 December) held telephone conversations with EU High Representative Javier Solana and Czech Foreign Minister and incoming EU Council President Karel Schwarzenberg.
Steinmeier and his interlocutors agreed that a further escalation of the situation had to be avoided at all costs. He made it clear that today's UN Security Council resolution was an important signal to that effect from the international community to both sides. Hamas's totally unjustifiable missile attacks had to cease forthwith, while Israel had to do everything it could to avoid civilian losses.
The three partners agreed that the people in Gaza urgently needed humanitarian aid and appealed to both sides to allow that aid to enter immediately and without further hindrance.
