After ten days in the hands of their kidnappers, the five Germans taken hostage in Egypt arrived safely back in Germany this morning on board a special Lufthansa aircraft. Straight after touching down at Berlin Tegel Airport they were reunited with their families.
The former hostages were welcomed at the airport by State Secretaries Reinhard Silberberg, August Hanning and Rüdiger Wolf from the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Interior Ministry and the Federal Defence Ministry. The officials expressed their relief over the holidaymakers' safe return and thanked the Federal Foreign Office crisis unit as well as everyone else who had worked so hard to make this happy outcome possible.
The special aircraft also brought back members of the Federal Police Special Forces GSG 9, the Federal Police Air Squadron and the Bundeswehr special forces as well as officials of the Federal Criminal Police Office and a logistics support team from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief. The Egyptian Government had accepted the offered assistance, agreeing that German security personnel could play a support role on the ground. In the event, however, this assistance was not required.
