21.09.2008 - Press release

A massive explosive device was detonated yesterday outside the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad. According to information available today, over 50 people died and many more were injured in the attack.

Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin today (21 September):

“I condemn this malicious attack which claimed so many lives and caused so much suffering in the strongest possible terms.”

In a letter of condolence to his counterpart in Pakistan, Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi, he wrote:

“Please accept my heartfelt condolences, which go to you and to the victims' families and loved ones. I wish all those who were wounded a speedy recovery. The perpetrators of this terrible act must be found and brought to justice. All support for the terrorists must be discouraged. We cannot repeat often enough that terror and violence must never be accepted as tools of political discourse.”
