12.09.2008 - Press release

Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier welcomes the power-sharing agreement reached by President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai after lenghty negotiations mediated by South African President Thabo Mbeki.

After lengthy negotiations mediated by South African President Thabo Mbeki, President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai reached a power-sharing agreement for the future.

Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier commented today (12 September) in Berlin:

"I welcome the agreement between the two parties in Zimbabwe. I hope it will pave the way towards a peaceful future. What matters now is to resolutely tackle the country's problems. Zimbabwe urgently needs a fresh start in both political and economic terms!

We will judge the new government by its deeds. I hope that a framework is created soon which safeguards democratic freedoms and enables economic development."
