The Federal Foreign Office today (27 August) earmarked 200,000 euro for humanitarian mine clearance in Georgia. These funds will be used to support the work of the HALO Trust NGO. Staff of that organization are already in Georgia to ascertain the level of contamination due to mines, cluster munitions and duds. HALO Trust will carry out a mine clearance operation in and around the town of Gori, to enable people displaced as a result of the conflict to return safely. The funds from Germany will be used to procure around 60 mine detectors and five ambulances.
This means that the Federal Foreign Office has now increased its humanitarian aid to
2.2 million euro.
