Ms Navanethem Pillay was today appointed United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights by the General Assembly. Responding to her official appointment, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier today (28 July) sent Ms Pillay the following letter of congratulation:
“Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on your appointment today as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. For your new post I wish you the necessary stamina, good luck and every possible success.
The job you are taking on in this 60th year since the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will confront you with immense challenges. I am delighted the United Nations will be benefiting from the wealth of experience you have gained in recent years in tackling with energy and zeal the most serious violations of human rights. This experience will certainly stand you in excellent stead in your new and important office. Please be assured that Germany will support you in every way we can as you tackle the tasks that await you.
I look forward to working with you to realize our common goal of protecting and promoting human rights in all parts of the world.”
