Speaking in Berlin today, Federal Foreign Minister Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed his concern at the incidents in Abkhazia and South Ossetia in recent days and called for calm:
"I have been following the recent violent incidents in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which have cost several lives, with great concern. All sides are now urgently called upon to prevent any further escalation of the situation.
These events show how urgent a comprehensive, peaceful solution to these conflicts is. Particularly in its capacity as coordinator of the Group of Friends of Georgia of the UN Secretary-General, Germany will make strenuous efforts to defuse the conflicts."
