Following many months of toing and froing, a new Head of State was elected in Lebanon today. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier welcomed the election in Berlin today (25 May) and congratulated the new President of the Lebanese Republic, Michel Suleiman:
“I congratulate Michel Suleiman on his election as President of the Lebanese Republic. This election is an important step towards resolving the constitutional crisis in Lebanon. I hope that under the leadership of President Suleiman a new government can be formed quickly and the political paralysis and instability overcome for good. This includes asserting the state's monopoly on the use of force.
I wish President Suleiman every success, stamina and a sure hand in tackling the considerable challenges facing him and his people. Germany will continue to provide Lebanon, its people and government with extensive support and to actively champion the country's full sovereignty, stability and economic reconstruction.”
