In view of the increasing number of victims following the severe earthquake in China's Sichuan province, Germany has offered China its help in managing the aftermath of the disaster. Federal Minister Steinmeier telephoned his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi to this end immediately after the disaster.
Against this background, the organizers of "Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together", including the Federal Foreign Office, the project sponsor, have decided in collaboration with Chongqing Municipal Government to hold a benefit concert on Chaotianmen Square in Chongqing on 17 May. The proceeds will go to earthquake victims.
Under the motto "We are a family", musicians from China and Germany will perform together, including the Chongqing Ensemble for traditional Chinese music, the Hohner accordion ensemble, the pop group Fools Garden and the composer Robert Zollitsch with the singer Gong Lina. The concert will also mark the end of the Germany Esplanade in Chongqing. The Germany Esplanade is part of the three-year "Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together" series, whose patrons are the Presidents of the two countries. The programme includes events and activities in the cultural, economic, scientific and educational spheres.
The German Ambassador in China, Dr Michael Schaefer, senior representatives of Chongqing Municipal Government and its twin city Düsseldorf will attend the concert. The Ambassador and the Düsseldorf representative will hand over donations. The partners of "Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together" have also launched a spontaneous collection.
