Telegram of condolence to Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, 13 May 2008

Following the earthquake in China, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier sent the following letter of condolence to his Chinese opposite number Yang Jiechi:

Dear colleague,

We were deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the devastating earthquake in south-western China yesterday which claimed so many lives and caused extensive damage. Allow me to extend our sincere condolences to you, your Government and the Chinese people.

Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, the injured and all those who have lost everything as a result of the earthquake. Our deepest sympathy goes out to them.

We know that China itself is doing everything in its power to deal with the consequences of the disaster and to alleviate the suffering of people in the regions affected. Should you need additional help, Germany is ready and waiting to support you. Please let us know if we can provide your country with practical assistance.
