Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin today (12 May) on yesterday's parliamentary elections in Serbia:
"The people of Serbia have elected a new parliament with a convincing result. The pro-European forces around President Tadić and Economics Minister Dinkić have chalked up an impressive victory. This is a workable starting-point for the formation of a government. I offer my warm congratulations on this victory.
The result of the election clearly demonstrates that most citizens of Serbia want to draw closer to Europe. This also underscores that it was the right decision to offer Serbia a European path. Most people in Serbia want Europe and this is a path we must continue to follow. I hope a government can be formed without delay with which we can together take the next steps towards Europe.
This government will have difficult tasks to master. Above all else, it has to successfully complete the transformation process currently under way. I hope very much that these reforms can now be tackled with determination. There is a future for the vision of a stable, democratic and European Serbia. This is good news – for Serbia and for Europe!"
