Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier today (9 May) sent a letter congratulating his new colleague, Micheál Martin, on his appointment as Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ireland. The letter read as follows:
"Please accept my sincere congratulations on your appointment as Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ireland. I wish you all the very best, great stamina and every success in carrying out your new responsibilities.
Relations between Germany and Ireland are marked by friendship and mutual trust. Our two countries are close partners in the European Union. I am certain that we will cooperate closely and in a spirit of partnership in tackling the challenges ahead, for example the ratification and implementation of the Lisbon Treaty. Let us work together to further develop and intensify the excellent relations between our two countries during the coming years.
I look forward to establishing a good working relationship with you and hope that we will soon have the opportunity to exchange views in person."
