Today (9 May), in a letter to his Italian counterpart Franco Frattini, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier congratulated him on once again being appointed as Minister for Foreign Affairs. The congratulatory letter read as follows:
"I warmly congratulate you on once more being appointed as Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Italian Republic. I wish you all the very best, a sure hand and every success in carrying out your responsible position. Your wealth of political experience and great personal commitment over the past years, particularly as your country's foreign minister and as member of the European Commission, will surely stand you in great stead in this regard.
Italy and Germany, as founder members of the European Union, have a duty to use their close relations to serve the goal of a shared future in Europe. I am sure we will be able to continue our countries' successful bilateral and international cooperation to date.
I look forward to working with you in a spirit of trust and hope we will soon have the opportunity, also outside the EU Ministerial Councils, to engage in a personal exchange of views."
