Special session of the Humanitarian Aid Coordinating Committee on the situation in Myanmar

08.05.2008 - Press release

In view of the dramatic situation in Myanmar, the Humanitarian Aid Coordinating Committee will convene for a special session chaired by Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier on 9 May.

The Coordinating Committee oversees German humanitarian aid measures worldwide. During the special session on Myanmar German aid organizations will consult with the Federal Government on coordinating the planned German assistance following Cyclone Nargis.

The Federal Foreign Office has pledged 1 million euro in emergency humanitarian aid. Further assistance is available. The precondition for international aid is access to the worst-affected areas. The Federal Government is putting pressure on the Myanmar Government to open the way for an effective international aid operation.

On Thursday (8 May), in a telephone conversation with his Myanmar opposite number, Federal Minister Steinmeier once again urged the military Government to support the international helpers. On Thursday morning the Federal Foreign Office summoned the Myanmar ambassador.
