An attack on Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul was foiled on Sunday morning. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin today (27 April):
"I was horrified to learn of the dastardly attack on President Karzai and am relieved that the President is unharmed and safe.
According to early reports, one person was killed and several were wounded in the attack, among them members of the Afghan parliament. We hope that all those injured recover quickly and fully.
The aim of this attack, for which the Taliban has claimed responsibility, is unmistakeable. It was intended to destabilize the Afghan Government and intimidate the people who are working to reconstruct Afghanistan and who want to ensure that their country has a real future. This tactic must not and shall not succeed. Germany is a close ally of Afghanistan and its people. We will thus steadfastly continue to provide comprehensive assistance for the stabilization and reconstruction of the country."
