Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is due to hold talks tomorrow (Thursday, 24 April) with Karen Koning Abu Zayd, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency For Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The main focus will be the plight of Palestinian refugees throughout the Near East and particularly in the Gaza Strip as well as UNRWA's work in the region.
In advance of Ms Abu Zayd's visit, Minister Steinmeier pledged 1 million euro to support UNWRA's work in the Gaza Strip in the field of emergency medical care. In Lebanon the Federal Foreign Office plans to channel up to 2 million euro to UNRWA over a period of three years to fund a new training centre for young Palestinians.
In 2008 we are also making a voluntary contribution of 7 million euro to UNRWA's regular budget.
