Yesterday (13 April) the Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and the Prime Minister-designate Raila Odinga announced the formation of a new government in Kenya.
Commenting on this, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin today (14 April):
“I am delighted that the two sides in Kenya have agreed on a power-sharing government. The country and its new coalition government face many challenges which now must be tackled urgently in the interest of the Kenyan people.
First and foremost, the process of reconciliation among the ethnic groups should be a central focus not just of the Government but of society as a whole. This includes coming to grips with the recent violence.
I hope the coalition partners will manage to join forces to move Kenya forward.”
