In connection with the publication of the results of the parliamentary elections in Zimbabwe, Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin today (3 April):
“The publication of the results of the parliamentary elections constitutes an initial step, and one that I welcome. They demonstrate very clearly that the people of Zimbabwe have voted for change!
Now it is important that the results of the presidential, senate and local elections are published rapidly and transparently. Further delays in the counting process will lead to disappointment among the population and harbour new risks.
I appeal to the powerholders in Zimbabwe to accept the will of the electorate. All unclarified issues concerning the elections must be resolved peacefully through dialogue.
Zimbabwe now has the opportunity to start afresh. The Zimbabwean people justifiably expect this opportunity to be seized.”
