The Federal Foreign Office is making available EUR 900,000 for emergency humanitarian relief measures to help flood victims in southern Africa. According to the United Nations, the heavy rains in recent weeks have affected more than one million people.
The Federal Foreign Office is using these funds to support German non-governmental organizations working locally to provide drinking water, food, household equipment and hygiene items as well as emergency medical care to those in need. In addition, German embassies are drawing on the funds to finance projects run by local aid agencies.
The assistance measures will initially benefit Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Madagascar and Zimbabwe. The Federal Foreign Office also plans to support disaster prevention projects and initiatives to strengthen the ability of communities in the region to help themselves.
