A referendum on joining the United Nations was held today in Taiwan parallel to the presidential elections. Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin today (22 March) on the ballots:
"The Federal Government welcomes the elections in Taiwan. Germany supports Taiwan's democratic values and economic development. In the interest of peace and security in the region, we now hope for a peaceful dialogue between the two sides, which will lead to a permanent detente in the Taiwan Strait.
Today's referendum will not change the legal situation around the Strait. The Slovenian EU Presidency unequivocally stated this again today on behalf of the Member States of the European Union. I expressly welcome the Presidency's clarification in line with our one-China policy.
At the same time I would like to stress that, within the scope of Germany's one-China policy, we support practical cooperation by Taiwan in those international bodies open to membership by non-states."
