In response to the violent clashes in connection with the occupation of a courthouse in northern Mitrovica, Foreign Minister Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement today (17 March) in Jerusalem:
“The acts of violence by Serbian demonstrators directed against members of the UNMIK police force and the International Security Presence (KFOR) in northern Mitrovica are unacceptable and wholly unjustifiable. I most strongly condemn them. We must establish who is responsible, and they must be held to account.
UN SC Resolution 1244, including UNMIK responsibility for northern Kosovo, must be fully respected by all sides.
The international community will take decisive action to counter all attempts to call this into question. I therefore strongly support the steps initiated by UNMIK and KFOR to restore calm and order. We must not let the calculations of the Serbian nationalists be proved right!”
