Federal Minister Steinmeier calls for an end to the violence in Tibet

16.03.2008 - Press release

Sundya morning (16 March), Federal Foreign Minister Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier spoke on the phone with China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi for almost an hour. In the course of the conversation, he underscored the German Government's grave concern about the latest outbreaks of violence in Tibet.

According to Steinmeier, the images of destruction and the highly regrettable number of reported deaths and injuries showed that violence cannot solve the underlying problems. In this situation everything must be done, he said, to prevent any further escalation and to create the conditions under which the clashes may come to a peaceful end.

Federal Minister Steinmeier called on his Chinese counterpart to ensure the greatest possible transparency with regard to the events in Tibet and asked him to do everything in his power to guarantee the safety of German nationals and tourists.
