Federal Minister Steinmeier condemns violence in Iraq

13.03.2008 - Press release

Federal Foreign Minister Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed his shock in Berlin today (13 March) at the death of the Iraqi Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho, who was kidnapped two weeks ago:

“I was both saddened and horrified today when I learnt of the death of Paulos Faraj Rahho, the Archbishop of Mosul, who had been kidnapped in Iraq. Although it remains unclear whether he was murdered or died as a result of his kidnapping, it is absolutely appalling that Christians, Christian communities and priests have now become the target of terrorism, violence and persecution in Iraq.

I call upon all parties and groups in the country to find their way back to the path of national and interdenominational reconciliation and to work to protect all religious communities, ethnic groups and minorities.”
