Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the outcome of the elections in the Republic of Cyprus

25.02.2008 - Press release

Before leaving for Jakarta, Federal Foreign Minister Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin today (25 February) on the outcome of the presidential elections in the Republic of Cyprus:

“The people of the Republic of Cyprus have elected a new head of state. I congratulate Demetris Christofias on his success and welcome the fact that he came out clearly in favour of reconciliation and ending the division of Cyprus. I hope it will be possible to use the opportunity now arising to resume the negotiation process under the auspices of the United Nations. Germany has from the start supported a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus conflict and made a major effort towards achieving that goal during the German EU presidency. Now as ever, we are ready to do everything we can to support new negotiations.”
