Today Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin expressing his shock regarding the recent bomb attack in Kandahar and calling for the rejection of violence, for the continuation of efforts towards Afghanistan's reconstruction and reconciliation:
“I am appalled at the Kandahar bombing which cost the lives of so many people. The Federal Government condemns this cowardly attack.
We share the Afghan people's sadness and shock, and our thoughts are with the victims' families and friends. We wish those injured a speedy and complete recovery. The instigators of this attack must be found and brought to justice.
The aim of the bombing is to spread fear and terror among the civilian population. To those responsible for this murderous act I say that the international community will not let itself be diverted from its commitment to the Afghan people. We will continue to stand by those who work towards the reconstruction of their country and who seek to give Afghanistan real prospects for the future.”
