German Government condemns attacks in Timor-Leste: Concern about President Ramos-Horta

11.02.2008 - Press release

Following the attacks on the President and Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Federal Foreign Minister Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier today (11 February) sent the following telegram to Prime Minister Gusmão:

“I was deeply shocked to learn of the attacks directed at you and President José Ramos-Horta in Dili.

It is especially saddening that the very people who are showing such personal dedication to the citizens of Timor-Leste and their future were then the target of this heinous act. The German Government utterly condemns these attacks and hopes the perpetrators will be identified immediately and called to account.

At this difficult time, our thoughts are with the casualties and their friends and families. I would like to express my deep sorrow and heartfelt sympathy to you and to all the people of Timor-Leste. I hope very much that President José Ramos-Horta's condition will stabilize quickly and wish the many who suffered injury a speedy and full recovery.

As your young democracy tackles the major challenges that lie ahead, it can be sure of Germany's constant support and keen interest.”
