Today (8 February) Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier met his counterpart from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, H.R.H. Prince Saud al-Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Their intensive exchange of opinions focused on the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, the current situation in the Gulf region and their shared concern regarding the ongoing crisis in Lebanon.
The two ministers once again urged all parties in Lebanon and the region to enable the election of a new president and the formation of a government, on the basis of the Arab League initiative. Syria too, they said, must now play a role. In this regard Federal Minister Steinmeier underlined the clear expectations which the German Government has time and again expressed vis-à-vis the Syrian Government. The Syrian leadership must, he said, seek a constructive role in the region, as only then would Syria's long-term interests have a chance of being taken into proper consideration.
