Federal Foreign Minister Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier discussed the current situation in Kenya with the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan by telephone today (27 January) and pledged the full support of Germany and its partners in the EU for the mediation efforts he is leading.
Federal Minister Steinmeier voiced the Federal Government's concern at the ongoing violence in Kenya. He pointed to the immense human suffering caused by the political crisis in Kenya which undermined the success of Kenya's economic and political development in recent years. The Minister emphasized that all the political and social forces in Kenya now have to work for an immediate end to the violence and for a political solution between the Government and the opposition. He underscored the Federal Government's firm expectation that the Government and opposition use the opportunity afforded them by the Annan mission and cooperate with mediators.
