The Federal Foreign Office is supporting the development of an internet database for the identification of illegal small arms.
With assistance from the Federal Foreign Office and in cooperation with the Bundeswehr Verification Center (ZVBw), the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) has created an interactive online guide on the spread of small arms worldwide, thus providing everyone concerned with tackling and controlling the proliferation of illegal weapons with a significant collection of data.
This instrument enables the authorities in countries affected by the problem, as well as the staff of UN and EU international peacekeeping missions, but also journalists, academics and scientists or individuals affected by the misuse of firearms to get an idea of the degree of proliferation in a particular case and to get help with identifying weapons online. The database is being further developed with funds from the current 2014 budget year: it is being expanded to include ammunition, and a French version is being produced. A module enabling extracts from the database to be printed out is intended to further simplify field studies. The Federal Foreign Office is providing around 60,000 euros for this purpose.
