Portuguese football star Eusebio died on 5 January at the age of 71. Of Mozambican origin, the Portuguese footballing legend is considered one of the greatest players of all times. He was top goal scorer in the 1966 World Cup.

In the Portuguese Embassy in Berlin on 8 January, Foreign Minister Steinmeier wrote the following in the book of condolences for the legendary football player:

Eusebio became a global star for a whole generation of football enthusiasts.

For me, too, he was a sporting idol in my youth. I have fond memories of his goals, speed and masterful playing during the 1966 World Cup and in many other international appearances. He was a role model and an idol for people in Portugal, Mozambique and the whole world. He was also, in the very best sense of the word, an ambassador for his country.

We share in the grief now felt by Eusebio’s family and friends, and we will honour his memory.

The book of condolences will be available for fans of the footballing idol in the Portuguese Embassy in Berlin until 9 January.
