On 23 June, Minister of State Michael Roth met Austrian Minister of Defence Gerald Klug at the Federal Foreign Office.
In their talks, Minister of State Roth and his Austrian guest stressed that cooperation between the two countries was excellent. They agreed that it was important to tackle current challenges together. The Minister of State underlined:
No single EU Member State is able to assume global responsibility on its own. Our efforts must go hand in hand.
He said that Austria was a reliable partner whose expertise we could draw on, particularly with regard to the further accession process in the Western Balkans. The Minister of State stressed:
We stand by the promise we made to the countries in the Western Balkans. It is, however, essential for the sensitive chapters on the rule of law and fundamental rights to be discussed at the onset of negotiations.
He added that in this context, closely dovetailing Austrian and German policies would also be very helpful.
